But life at sea is better - Drake won a series of spectacular victories and his exploits made him a feared pirate to the Spaniards, to whom he was known as 'El Draque'. Returning once more and laden with treasure of emeralds and gold, Drake sailed into Portsmouth to a hero's welcome.
